Dunphy School in Williamsburg explored artifacts from the Mill River Flood of 1874. They sketched the medal given to local milkman and hero\, Collins Graves\, who saved lives. This exhibit is part of the “Art and Healing Project” at the hospital\, offering support to patients and visitors. \nThe exhibit is open to the public daily beginning at 7 AM. SUMMARY:Dam Trail History Hike (Space limited\, RSVP required)
DESCRIPTION:Visitors scramble over the ruins on the west side of the main breach. Williamsburg Historical Society\, Williamsburg\, MA.\nWilliamsburg historian Eric Weber will lead a ~1.5 mile hike (out and back) to the ruins of the Williamsburg Reservoir Company dam\, whose failure in 1874 devastated four downstream villages and claimed 139 lives. Eric will tell the story of the disaster as we walk and pause at several stops. \nThis series is part of the Resilient Upper Mill River Watershed Project in Williamsburg funded through the Commonwealth’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program. \nCOST: Free\nAGES: Adult and teen\nDOGS: Please leave non-service dogs at home.\nRSVP: Required \nAccessibility\nTrail Details\n\nDistance Traveled: 1.5-mile out and back\, ~160’ total elevation gain\nPace: Slow-moderate (1.5 – 2 mph)\nSeating: No seating is available on this hike. We’ll have opportunities to pause and catch our breath.\nSlopes: Sustained moderate slopes with multiple strenuous\, steep sections.\nTrail Surfaces: Forest trails with potential for roots\, rocks\, and mud\, with some spots featuring uneven footing.\n\nThe Other Stuff\n\nBathroom: No bathroom facilities at this location.\nFragrances: To be respectful of those with allergies and environmental sensitivities\, please refrain from wearing strong fragrances.\nParking: Carpooling is encouraged. Witness how the landscape has responded to future-focused harvesting and planting projects conducted in the past few years.
